My car wouldn't start but the battery charged

My car wouldn't start but the battery charged the car does not start: the causes and solutions to get it started again.

We get into the vehicle, grab the steering wheel, try to turn the key in the ignition, the starter motor makes some noise, some lights on the car seem to light up, but nothing to do, the car won't turn on. Very often it is possible to find a solution to the car's starting problems by yourself, thus avoiding going to the mechanic immediately.

LOW BATTERY - First you need to understand if the starter motor is blocked or working. If it doesn't turn, the cause is, almost always, a dead battery. To check this, just turn on the headlights. If the light is completely missing or dim, it is the battery: it needs to be recharged or replaced. For an emergency start it is possible to get by without a mechanic: all you need is jump leads and the help of another driver, willing to "share" his charged battery.

The important thing is that the batteries have the same voltage, otherwise, if the battery of the charged machine is more powerful than the discharged one, there is a risk that this will damage the electrical system.

STARTER MOTOR LOCKED - You can try to unlock it by engaging a low gear (if the gearbox is mechanical) and pushing the car back and forth. If the operation is successful, a metallic noise will be heard which will testify to the unlocking. If this operation fails, you should contact an auto electrician.

THE KEY TURNS BUT THE CAR DOES NOT TURN ON - One of the possible solutions is to check the battery terminal cable connections which may be corroded. You can try to force with the tip of a screwdriver between the connector and the post terminal and then start the engine. If it starts, then it is necessary to clean or replace the cables (this type of operation should actually be done periodically every three months).

COIL PROBLEMS - If the engine struggles to start both when it is cold and when it is hot and the battery is in good condition, the problems may be due to the lack of petrol in the injection system. In this case it is most likely the ignition coil, but to solve this anomaly it is necessary to rely on a professional.

FLOODED CAR - Flooding of the engine represents a further impediment to starting the car. Recognizing this situation, you must first press the accelerator fully, thus turning the engine so that it "freezes". If that doesn't work, then the problem is related to the spark plugs: you have to unscrew them, let them dry and then put them back in their place.

FUEL - A last possibility, paradoxical but not rare, which can compromise the starting of an engine is the lack of petrol or diesel. It can happen due to a failure of the level indicator, but also due to carelessness on the part of the driver.

These are the most common causes that prevent the car from starting, however, if in doubt about the cause of the misfire or how to take action to solve it, it is recommended to contact your trusted mechanic. This way you will avoid causing major damage to your car.

Why the car does not start, what to do

Why the car does not start: what to do if the car does not show signs of life. Do-it-yourself advice and checks for diesel or petrol cars.

When the car does not start, it is generally recommended to turn on the ignition and check for the presence of car warning lights on the control panel. But what if the car does not show signs of life and when the ignition does not turn on when the key is turned? Here, the problem here could be the battery or, in some cases, the starter motor. These problems are common for both diesel and gasoline cars.

Why doesn't the car start?

"I turn the key and the ignition does not turn on". How many of you has this happened to? When the car does not start and the instrument panel does not give signals, various causes are possible but generally the main cause is a flat battery.

Car won't start, low battery symptoms or broken starter motor

The symptoms to be grasped are these:

  • The ignition does not turn on.
  • When you complete the key turn, the starter motor begins to cough but the car does not start.

If the cause is related to the starter motor, the symptoms you will have are these:

  • The car's instrument panel comes on.
  • The engine shows no sign of life.

The starter motor broken or that in any case presents problems, does not give symptoms at the level of the electrical panel, in fact, when the key is turned, the instrument panel turns on. On the other hand, when the starter motor does not turn there are no jolts in the engine, typical of problems related to a flat car battery.

Why the car does not start, other causes

In this paragraph we have reported the two most common causes, i.e. starter motor blocked or low battery. However, these are not the only possible causes. Less frequent but still valid is the hypothesis of problems with the electrical control unit or the ignition key. So, returning to the question why the car does not start, the causes may be:

  • Low car battery
  • Starter motor blocked
  • Problems in recognizing the code of the ignition key
  • Vehicle defense mechanisms (active lock)
  • Dirty injectors
  • Wrong refueling (petrol instead of diesel)

If the car keys have fallen to the ground or the car key batteries are now almost flat, it is possible that the key is not recognized by the control unit.

my car wouldn't start but the battery charged Or a problem with the fuses of the control unit itself may have caused a failure to recognize the electronic code of the key, therefore, even if you turn the key, the car will not start. In this context, I invite you to read the guide How to start the car that does not recognize the key code.
